Why Coatings?

The paintings, coatings, adhesives and sealants used in the PPG Science Pavilion were selected for their design, comfort, durability and low emissivity criteria. Low- and no-volatile organic compound (VOC) finishes have less off-gassing of solvents and create a healthier space. No more “new car smell”, which is a good thing for the health of our employees and guests.

MetalCase ShopCoat Primer by PPG
MetalCase primer by PPG is known as a shop primer – it is applied at a factory to immediately help protect the steel from corrosion, also known as rust. Coatings protect steel by acting as a barrier to keep the corrosive environment from attacking the metal, just like your house protects you from the weather. Pigments, or colors, are added to paints. One of the pigments used in Metalcase primer is red iron oxide. Chemically it’s the same as red rust. So rust is an ingredient in a paint that keeps metal from rusting.

PPG PAINTS SPEEDHIDE® Interior Latex Paint
People who get paid to watch paint dry are known as ‘Paint Chemists.’ Temperature and humidity can have a big influence on how quickly a paint dries. PPG Paints Speedhide meets the strictest V.O.C. regulations in the US. Because this product has low levels of volatiles and are low in odor, they were applied while workers were still in the building.

MEGASEAL Epoxy by PPG
Epoxies like MegaSeal by PPG were used in the floor of the Rangos Giant Cinema to protect it and keep it looking nicer, longer. These two-component paints have materials that are mixed together before painted. MegaSeal is applied at 10-30 mils—that’s about the thickness of three to four of the hairs on your head!

OLYMPIC® WATERGUARD® by PPG
Olympic WaterGuard is a clear sealer. It is designed to protect the concrete from water damage and provide a mildew resistant coating, but not change the appearance of the concrete. Math time: ‘Area’ is calculated by multiplying the length of an area by its width. One gallon of Olympic WaterGuard covers approximately 300 square feet—so a sidewalk 3 feet wide and 100 feet long, or a patio 30 feet wide by 10 feet long (or a curb 1 foot wide and 300 feet long!).
