The Resistance: Fighting Disease with Nanotech

Modern medicine faces a challenge. Common methods of fighting infectious diseases are losing their effectiveness as bacteria, viruses, and fungi evolve antimicrobial resistance. This resistance - the ability of the target microbe to resist the toxic effects of the substance - arises from repeated exposure to sublethal doses, which is a consequence of their widespread use and a highly interconnected society. This workshop will engage students in activities that help them gain an appreciation for where antimicrobials are used in our daily lives (you find them in more places than you think!), introduce the concept of transmission (between people and between animals and humans), and focus on current research that investigates the use of nano-scale materials to combat the resistance challenge.

Science and Technology topics include:

  • Fighting disease: nanotechnology
  • Medicine
  • Engineering
  • Chemistry
  • Biology
