New! Ecosystems, Toxins, and Your Health

How do toxic chemicals affect ecosystems? Why use models? How does this affect you every day?

Environmental scientists and engineers use computer models to understand and predict the impacts of toxic chemicals on living systems.

In this program, students will use a computer model of interacting organisms in a lake ecosystem to explore:

  • Predator-prey interactions in lakes (food web transfer).
  • How these interactions are affected by the presence of toxic  chemicals.
  • Why chemicals accumulate in organisms (bioaccumulation) and which species might be most vulnerable.
  • How computer models can be used for understanding, prediction, and scenario testing in science.

Also, explore behind the scenes, and adjust the code yourself! Experiment! See what changes the ecosystem. NetLogo software is free, so you can continue to explore on your own or in your classroom.

Designed by Carla A. Ng, PhD, Assistant Professor, Civil & Environmental Engineering, and presented by her University of Pittsburgh graduate and undergraduate students.

Science and technology topics include:

  • Environment
  • Engineering
  • Computer science
