Science on Screen®:
Hidden Figures

Featuring an introduction by Dr. Elayne Arrington, first African American woman to graduate from the University of Pittsburgh’s School of Engineering
Wed., July 24 at 7 pm

Genius has no race. Strength has no gender. Courage has no limit.

The Oscar-nominated film Hidden Figures serves as latest installment of The Rangos Giant Cinema’s Science on Screen® series. The film focuses on a team of African American women who provided NASA with important mathematical data needed to launch the program’s first successful space missions in the 1960s. Dr. Elayne Arrington, the first African American woman to graduate from the University of Pittsburgh’s School of Engineering, will introduce the film and share some of her experiences working as an aeronautical engineer.

About the film:

As the United States raced against Russia to put a man in space, three brilliant African American women at NASA — Katherine Johnson (Taraji P. Henson), Dorothy Vaughan (Octavia Spencer), and Mary Jackson (Janelle Monáe) — became the brains behind one of the greatest operations in history: the launch of astronaut John Glenn (Glen Powell) into orbit, a stunning achievement that restored the nation’s confidence, turned around the Space Race, and captivated the world.

About Science on Screen:

The Science on Screen program pairs screenings of classic, cult, science fiction, and documentary films with lively presentations by notable experts from the world of science and technology. Each film is used as a jumping-off point for a speaker to introduce current research or technological advances in a manner that engages audiences of all backgrounds. Science on Screen is an initiative of the Coolidge Corner Theatre, with major support from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation.

About the guest speaker:

Dr. Elayne Arrington has seen, through personal experiences, an evolution of the attitude toward the black female in the STEM community. “It is a journey that encounters the total marginalization of the past, the partial assimilation of the present, and the hope for absolute inclusion in the future,” she said.

Arrington attended West Mifflin and Homestead public schools, graduating first in her class from Homestead Senior High School. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical engineering, aeronautical option, and the Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy degrees in mathematics. In addition to being the first African American woman to graduate from Pitt’s School of Engineering, she is the 17th African American woman in the history of the United States to earn a Ph.D. in mathematics.

Arrington worked in the Foreign Technology Division (FTD) of Wright-Patterson Air Force Base (WPAFB) as an aerospace engineer, the first female employed in such a capacity at FTD. She’ll discuss her experiences and career before the film.
