Science on Screen®: Computer Chess

Featuring an introduction by Ashley Lynn Priore, founder and CEO of The Queen’s Gambit Chess Institute
The Age of Digital Anxiety: The Decline of Journey-Thinking in the Technology Era
Sat., June 8 at 7 pm

Set over the course of a weekend tournament for chess software programmers thirty-some years ago, Computer Chess transports viewers to a nostalgic moment when the contest between technology and the human spirit seemed a little more up for grabs. We get to know the eccentric geniuses possessed of the vision to teach a metal box to defeat man, literally, at his own game, laying the groundwork for artificial intelligence as we know it and will come to know it in the future.

The film opened at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival, garnering the Alfred P. Sloan Feature Film Prize. Written and directed by Andrew Bujalski, it was filmed using analog cameras.

Ashley Lynn Priore, founder and CEO of The Queen’s Gambit Chess Institute, a nonprofit organization dedicated to chess programming and outreach in the Pittsburgh region, will serve as our Science on Screen guest speaker. She’ll discuss how technology has made us view games like chess and fields of science as “finding the right result,” rather than the journey and process through which we find solutions. What implications does this have on our society, and what does it mean for the future of chess?

About the speaker:

Priore is the founder and CEO of The Queen’s Gambit Chess Institute, a nonprofit organization dedicated to chess programming and outreach in the Pittsburgh region. A social entrepreneur and educator, Priore leads the chess movement in Pittsburgh. She works directly with public officials to expand chess programming across the city and is the Pennsylvania State Coordinator for the National Women’s Chess Committee. A board member of the Pittsburgh Chess Club, Priore has changed the way students learn chess by creating an interactive curriculum that explains how chess reinforces subjects taught in school, fosters mental growth, and encourages social, economic, and political involvement.

About Science on Screen:
