Science Sleepovers!

2017 Sleepovers

Bring your family or Scout troop for a night at the Science Center!  There’s a terrific variety of themes to choose from.

Science of Toys
Friday, Feb. 10 – CANCELLED
Discover the science behind your favorite toys, old and new. From the simple physics of a Slinky to the cutting-edge technology behind Bloxels, you will never look at your toys the same way again!

Engineering
Friday, Feb. 24
Put your thinking cap on as you design, build and test out feats of engineering genius! Create towers, catapults, mazes, and anything else you can imagine during an inventive night of fun. On Saturday, stay for the annual Engineer the Future event to meet with engineering professionals and enjoy additional hands-on activities.

Invention Challenge – Boys Only Night

How many things can you make with a pipe cleaner? Test your creativity by completing a mystery invention challenge and design brand new inventions out of everyday objects!

Slimefest
Friday, March 17
Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day with tons of ooey, gooey, green slime! Get hands-on and discover the differences between slime, Oobleck, and Floam. You can even see slime that glows, dances, and changes color!

Astronomy
Saturday, March 25
Explore the wonders of the cosmos in this star-studded sleepover adventure. Take a look at the night sky and see if you have what it takes to be an astronaut. It's an out-of-this-world experience you won’t want to miss. On Saturday, explore activities included in our annual Space Out! Weekend.

Science that Glows
Friday, March 31
What’s inside a glow stick? Why do some things glow under a black light? Examine the science of luminescence and fluorescence as you carry out experiments and discover different ways to make objects glow.

Mission Possible
Saturday, April 8
Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to become a STEM spy! Make a cipher disk, discover the science behind real life spy gadgets, and create a secret alias.

Robotics
Friday, April 21
Calling all Robot enthusiasts! Visit with R2D2, Gort, and Robby while getting hands-on with robots of all shapes and sizes. Assemble your own robot with Cubelets, try your hand at programming, and use sensors to navigate through a maze.

Colorful Science
Saturday, April 29
From physics to chemistry, learn how color and science go hand-in-hand.  Investigate the visible light spectrum, observe colorful chemical reactions, and discover the secret behind color-changing beads.

Superhero Science

Unlock your inner superhero! Learn about the science behind your favorite characters, test out your own powers, and create your own secret identity!

Invention Challenge - Girls Only Night

  • Free admission for the day following the sleepover, including Highmark SportsWorks® and USS Requin

Fees

Groups need to provide one adult chaperone for every eight children. Families or those not part of a group must also have a parent or guardian present.

Schedule

Check-in begins at 6 pm the evening of your sleepover, where you will receive a detailed schedule of the night's happenings. The overnight experience will begin with a brief orientation, after which participants will enjoy a night of themed activities. Lights-out is at midnight. All sleepover gear must be removed from the building by 9:30 am, but you are welcome to stay the day after and explore even more with your general admission, included in your sleepover cost!

T-shirts

A Sleepover T-shirt is the best souvenir to remember your special night at the Science Center. They will be on sale in the XPLOR Store the morning after your overnight experience.
