A Science Center volunteer interacting with guests

Adult Volunteers

Join us at Carnegie Science Center for a volunteer experience like no other! We need dedicated volunteers to handle liquid nitrogen, dive into our submarine’s naval past, explain the local history of our Miniature Railroad & Village®, engage with visitors in our exhibit galleries, and answer visitors’ questions.

No science expertise necessary – just a sense of fun and a willingness to learn! Our volunteer team includes diverse people of all ages, abilities, educational levels, and employment backgrounds Our volunteers have all sorts of different backgrounds, from STEM professionals to stay-at-home parents.

Carnegie Science Center will provide free parking to volunteers when they are onsite for volunteer shifts.

Whether it’s greeting guests on their way into exhibitions or showing off cool demonstrations, our volunteers get lots of training and opportunities to share scientific fun with visitors. But we also have limited volunteer opportunities for volunteers to assist behind-the-scenes.

To begin your volunteer opportunity, complete an application online or download and email or mail your application opens in a new window. Once we get your application, we’ll review it and contact you if you’re selected for an interview. The Science Center will pause adult volunteer onboarding between April and August as we onboard a large number of summer teen volunteers.

If selected to join our Volunteer Program, volunteers must complete an orientation before they can begin to volunteer.

Adult volunteer positions require a minimum time commitment of 6 months. Weekly/monthly time commitments vary by position. See description of volunteer opportunities for details.

Upon acceptance into the program, all volunteers are required to provide and pay for background checks and clearances. Volunteers who have lived in Pennsylvania for at least 10 years must have their Child Abuse History Clearance (Act 33) and Criminal Record Check Clearance (Act 34). Volunteers who have lived in Pennsylvania for less than 10 years must have their Child Abuse History Clearance (Act 33) and Criminal Record Check Clearance (Act 34) plus an FBI Fingerprint Clearance (Act 114). Act 33 and 34 Clearances are free for volunteers.
