JOB TITLE: Full-Time Executive Director-Arts Education Collaborative
DESCRIPTION: The Arts Education Collaborative seeks a creative, entrepreneurial, and proactive leader with a demonstrated knowledge of schools, school systems, and educational policy including challenges, limitations, and opportunities faced by school districts today. The successful candidate will have an understanding of and passion for the arts as central to human experience and therefore to a high quality education that is provided equitably to all children. The executive director shapes the organization's vision, design, and delivery of innovative programs and services for educators and school district leaders that strengthen preK-12 education by making the arts central to learning through collaboration, research, and advocacy.
The executive director leads a staff of 4 professionals (plus interns and occasional contracted experts), works with a steering committee and advisors, and establishes and nurtures important external collaborations. The position oversees all administrative functions including budget development, fundraising, and financial management, as well as program and policy decisions that will achieve the AEC mission and insure the organization's long term sustainability and relevance. The executive director represents the organization in public, business, and professional settings in regional and national forums and contributes to productive change in education through effective writing, speaking, and advocacy.
The position requires a B.A/B.S degree, advanced degree preferred; five or more years of senior management experience preferably in a nonprofit setting especially in a progressive school district or educational, art, or cultural environment. Must have a successful record of accomplishment in forward thinking leadership and overall management.
The Arts Education Collaborative is an education nonprofit founded in 1998. It operates through the auspices of Carnegie Museums of Pittsburgh (CMP) that serves as the organization's fiscal agent; AEC staff are employees of CMP and the executive director reports to the director of education of Carnegie Museum of Art. The organization benefits from the guidance of a steering committee and regional advisors, enjoys the generous support of regional and national foundations, and generates approximately 12% of its budget through earned income.
The AEC's primary audiences are teachers, especially but not exclusively arts educators; school principals, district superintendents and other administrators; cultural arts professionals and their organizations; parents; and policy makers. The AEC values evaluation and data-driven decision making. In addition to evaluation of its own programs, the AEC provides professional evaluation services to regional school districts and to arts and culture organizations and disseminates findings and interpretations of policies affecting education through publications and programs.
