Exploring Marcellus Shale on RiverQuest

Weekend public sails ticketed through Carnegie Science Center

Learn about the sedimentary rock called shale, and why it has long been known as a potential but untapped source for fossil fuels. Hands-on activities let passengers discover how the process of "fracking" can be used to help extract oil and natural gas from rock, consider the environmental and municipal concerns related to fracking, and how risks might be addressed by drilling companies and municipalities. Discover how rocks can be like sponges, make your own "rock art" petroglyph and test your knowledge of different types of rocks. Look at river plankton under a microscope like a scientist, and find out the link between plankton and the Marcellus Shale.

Cost is $7.95 for adults and $5.95 for children, available at the Science Center ticket counter. Trips proceed rain or shine. Tickets are not refundable unless the trip is cancelled by RiverQuest.
