Come aboard to learn how 80 men used their expertise, humor and sheer ingenuity to carve out a rough and adventurous life during Requin’s lengthy defense and scientific missions, some of which are still classified to this day! State-of-the-art and battle ready when she set out just days before the end of World War II, USS Requin holds the distinction of being the Navy’s first Radar Picket submarine.

Go beneath the surface of submarine life with Living History aboard USS Requin. Carnegie Science Center has partnered with Carnegie Mellon University’s Entertainment Technology Center (ETC) to add high-tech interactive experiences to the historic submarine. It’s the first-ever use of interactive technology such as this aboard a historic ship.

The ETC developed interactive touch screen content for six of Requin’s compartments: the forward torpedo room, control room, mess deck, berthing compartment and two engine rooms. Each station explains a principle of nautical science and ties that principle to real-life stories about Requin, incorporating audio and video recordings of actual Requin veterans and their heartwarming, amusing stories of life on the ship. Each kiosk gives visitors access to multiple levels of information about Requin and submarines in general and includes a kid’s area from the main menu.

Each kiosk triggers dynamic sound effects through surround-sound speakers and sub-woofers cleverly hidden underfoot. Crew chatter and officer commands bring work and recreational spaces to life. To cap off this extraordinary experience, four flat-screen TV monitors with hyper-sonic sound speakers continuously loop historic educational video in the stern room, the submarine’s exit area.

Plan your visit to this uniquely immersive experience today!
