Family Workshops
Sundays from 1–4 pm
Bond with your family like never before…with science! Go on a scavenger hunt with geocaching; build, launch, and take home your very own rocket; make a laser light show; and even make an LED ornament! It’s the most unique thing to do with your family this side of the Milky Way!

Cost: $12 adult member, $6 child member; $15 adult non-member, $8 child non-member (per class)

Geocaching

Discover how your family can become part of a worldwide scavenger hunt known as geocaching! Find out how to get involved, what type of GPS unit to buy, and search for some caches at the Science Center. You may bring your own GPS unit, or one will be loaned to your family for use during the class.

Rockets

As a family, find out how rockets work and learn the history of space exploration. Build, launch, and take home your very own rocket.

Laser Magic

Get a behind-the-scenes look at one of our laser shows, and then try your hand at making a simple laser light show of your own.

Electrify your holidays by experimenting with conductive threat to make a unique LED ornament.

Computer Hardware Workshop
It’s the inside that counts! Go inside the computer’s shell to learn about the hardware and software that make computers work. Build teamwork skills as you piece together a computer from scratch. Then use the scientific method to troubleshoot any problems. For ages 10–13.

Dive into computer programming using Alice, a 3D programming environment that allows users to tell stories, create animations, and develop simple video games. For ages 10–13.

Miniature Railroad & Village® Behind-the-Scenes Workshop
Sundays from noon–3 pm
Ever wonder what it’s like to work on our world-renowned miniature railroad display? Come for the most in-depth experience yet as you go behind the scenes and learn what it takes to keep this magical treasure in tip-top shape. Learn how we make scenery a reality, discover how we animate the figures, and even build a tree that will become a part of the exhibit! Don’t miss this rare opportunity to get up-close and personal with one of Pittsburgh’s most beloved icons while it’s closed to the general public. For ages 10 and up. Capacity is limited.
