Engineer the Future 2019

Cost: Free with Admission
Date: Feb 21, 2019 Daily until Feb 23, 2019

Coinciding with National Engineers Week, this event explores exciting projects that engineers tackle and celebrates our region's achievements and advances in architecture, building, and construction.

Event times:

Thurs., Feb. 21: 10 am–3 pm
Fri., Feb. 22: 10 am–3 pm
Sat., Feb. 23: 10 am–3 pm

Check out presentations, engage in hands-on activities, and see dazzling demonstrations designed to inspire future engineers, including:

  • Using iPads and the Happy Atoms Chemistry Set to build models of different molecules, courtesy of Carnegie STEM Girls.
  • Connecting engineering and art with a hands-on project related to animation and movement, thanks to The Frick Pittsburgh.
  • Learning about electrical safety from Eaton by seeing how a circuit breaker works and how an overloaded outlet can cause the circuit breaker to trip.
  • Building a clay boat designed to hold as much weight as possible and testing it with pennies under the supervisions of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
  • Making paper bridge piers and trying to outwit "The Crusher" from HDR, which demonstrates the amount of deflection—the degree to which a structural element is displaced under a load—of a "bridge deck" with piers vs. without piers and local deflection between piers.

Educators: To book a field trip, call 412.237.3400.
